DPIIT signs agreements with over 50 companies to promote mfg, the innovation ecosystem for startups

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has so far signed agreements with over fifty companies, including ITC, Flipkart and Mercedes-Benz, to foster a manufacturing and innovation ecosystem for startups, an official said.

The department has proactively reached out to a number of major corporations, industry associations, veterans and unicorns to highlight the importance of setting up manufacturing incubators and the benefits of actively collaborating with manufacturing startups.

“So far, the department has signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) with more than 50 companies for this purpose,” the official said.

This is part of the exercise to encourage the startup ecosystem and the industry as a whole to promote innovation in manufacturing by supporting and collaborating with startups and developing manufacturing incubators.

Companies that have entered into these MoUs with the DPIIT include boAT, HDFC Capital Advisors, Hero Moto, Zepto, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Yes Bank, Paytm, Walmart and Ather Energy.

This exercise is important because manufacturing startups need support from various stakeholders in the ecosystem to grow and scale.

Manufacturing-focused incubators are one of the key drivers for supporting startups as they provide essential pilot, scale-up and production facilities that can provide plug-and-play options to product startups, reducing the burden of high capital investments.

These incubators provide startups with access to shared facilities to support innovative product development and early-stage manufacturing, paving the way for growth and scaling of the ecosystem.

They also act as an interface between the startups and the medium and large companies, providing access to manufacturing pilot facilities, test beds, prototyping facilities, design centers and technology management facilitation, market access and venture capital.

Such incubators can be set up by a variety of entities such as companies, academic institutions and research institutes, the official said.
