Republican Parties (Bettor’s joy) Last night’s victory in the Group Two Lamb and Hayward ‘Canterbury Classic’ was cause for double celebration from his breeders John and Katrina Price.

REPUBLICAN PARTY REPEAT

On Tuesday, the Republican Party’s mother, Democrat Party, delivered her newest foal, a filly by Captaintreacherous.

“That’s what we were hoping for. She’s the first foal she’s had that isn’t from Bettor’s Delight. She’s booked to go back to Captaintreacherous,” Katrina said.

Trained by Cran and Chrissie Dalgety, the Republican Party is now rapidly approaching millionaire status and is just $71,016 away from the milestone.

“He’s such a real professional little racehorse. We’re very proud of him. Carter (Dalgety) rode him fantastic last night. They just have a great partnership. He’s so versatile, so Carter has options with him.”

The descendants of the Democratic Party have now won thirty-five races and there are a few more foals in the pipeline.

Barry Purdon and Scott Phelan purchased her 2022 colt War Party, an unraced two-year-old.

“He qualified, but he just did a few things wrong, so they ruined him and he’s out for a long break.”

The Dalgetys purchased the Republican Party’s full brother, Tour Party, at the NZB Standardbred Yearling Sales in February.

“The reports about him are very good.”

In last night’s pacing feature, Carter helped the Republican Party get away from its second line draw and settle into the outer running line. In the 2000, he pressed the start button and walked across the field to take on the role of pacer. He ran his final 800 in 55.5, giving his rivals no chance of catching him and at the end of the 2600 meters he was three lengths ahead of Don’t Stop Dreaming.

The victory was the Republican Party’s second victory in the pacing function. He won the title in 2023 and last night’s winning time of 3-12.2 was identical to his 2023 victory.

Carter’s first ride on him was a winning one in September 2022 at Addington and he has now ridden him in ten of his twenty-three victories, including all four of his group successes.

The Republican Party gave the young leader his first Group 1 win when he won the Invercargill Cup last year. That victory was followed by G1 successes in the Auckland Cup, the New Zealand Messenger and the Roy Purdon Memorial.

In the fifty-four year history of the Canterbury Classic, nine horses have won the New Zealand Cup in the same year: Lunar Chance, Lord Module, Bonnies Chance, Master Mood, Monkey King (2), Terror To Love, Lazarus and Self Assured.

The prizes head north for Cup Week, not only to see the Republican Party in the $1,000,000 IRT New Zealand Cup, but also to see Ruby Roe, Chicago Sky, Duchess Maria and Indulge Me, all of whom they bred and own.
