DoorDash appears to have confirmed a viral story about a driver using an AI-generated photo to lie about delivering an order.

If reported by NextstarAustin resident Byrne Hobart said he experienced exactly this, writing in a message on X: “Great. The DoorDash driver accepted the drive, immediately marked it as delivered, and submitted an AI-generated image of a DoorDash order (left) to our front door (right).”

After his message started getting attention, Hobart offered more detailsacknowledging that his story would be “quite easy” to falsify. But he noted: “Someone mentioned further down the thread that the same thing happened to him, also in Austin, with the same driver display name.”

As for how the driver pulled it off, Hobart speculated that they used a hacked account on a jailbroken phone and obtained an image of his front door through a DoorDash feature that shows photos of previous deliveries.

A DoorDash spokesperson told TechCrunch: “After quickly investigating this incident, our team permanently deleted the Dasher account and ensured the customer was cured. We have zero tolerance for fraud and use a combination of technology and human review to identify bad actors and prevent them from abusing our platform.”
