Are you looking for a great winter marathon? Are you thinking about how you can hand it in for the whole family in a vacation? I know you are because this is the game that we players play to make everyone enthusiastic about our training. Enter a trip to Rescue, California, the sunniest place in Cali.Because I am not someone who recommends our athletes without doing some research, we have taken a long weekend to discover the area and lead sharing of the course.
Good news, it’s fantastic.
Better news, there are plenty of paths (I will tell you about it).
The best news, it has something for everyone and in a relaxed, no hasty way.
Rescue, California Trails
Ok, before we go to the marathon, let’s just talk about this as a running and bicycle destination in general. Did you know that this is where Sara Hall lived and trained for many years?
In fact there are 220 miles of paths here!
And so many waterfalls to choose from! Who doesn’t like it.
We have tested quite a bit during our trip and the good news is that there are options for every level, whether you want to run, cycle or walk.
Sacramento River Trail (paved)
More than 17 miles paved path runs along the river of the Shasta Dam to the most important places in the center as the Sundial Bridge. That is precisely why you will see it as part of the marathon!
It was not only quite close to the water, but the flowers in May. Oh the flowers. I was just taking everything in heaven and early in the day you get shadow to make every summer temperatures quite damn pleasant.
Swollen
The mountain bikers absolutely love this area and David was no exception. While you will climb, nothing is too aggressive and you also get a great stream.
For a runner, these can be a little more technical and perhaps not as interesting as the FB course, but I also only treated a small part of what is available. Absolutely much here to keep yourself busy for a long time.
We rented his E-Mountain bicycle from Rescue Adventure Hub. It is clear that people there are also motorcyclists who know the area and give you many ideas. They also changed pedals so that he could use his and while he brought a helmet, you can also rent them.
FB Trail
This was another recommendation of the bicycle shop. Although it was a super easy ride for David, it was a fantastic trail run for both of us another day.
A few small technical places, but usually it flows a single track along the river. And people do those views absolutely well if you have to walk to catch your breath.
For cyclists this is a great long journey day. Start in the city and follow the path all the way to Dam Square. Especially with an ebike it goes flying and gives you a really great view.
Boulder Creek Trail
We heard about a lot of waterfalls around salvation. Eventually was the one we decided to walk to Boulder Creek Falls … I mean, it felt like it cried our Colorado people.
Because we had done so many other kilometers, we chose to drive to the Mill Creek Trailhead. Warning It is narrow, steep and was probably the most worried about part of my journey. Ha. Have four -wheel drive.
Once there it was a really pleasant walk of 2 miles back where we encountered no fewer than 300 butterflies! They were just completely over and that was an unexpected moment of joy.
Reaching the waterfall was rewarded with a drop in Temps and a stunning site. Take a bag with a towel and snacks so that you can stop and really enjoy it.
Is this a big city of major marathon, no. But for many of you that will be the draw and why for a small race about high % ends with a qualifying time from Boston.
It is a net downhill course of 1326 feet. My brain from Colorado heard sea level and net downhill, very exciting.
Don’t be fooled, it also has a slow steady climb of miles 10-14, but the wage is a long descent and a flat finish. Moreover, the average starting line temperature is 45, which we know is ideal for PR versions.Without all the extra things that are going on, you can relax pre-race and bring the shuttle to the start of this point to the course in a reasonable time !! It only starts at 8 o’clock!
You could also do it as a marathon relay or enjoy the 5K.
At the moment the race is around 200 people, but I would be shocked to see that it doesn’t continue to grow. With more races sold out and so little with great winter temperatures, this seems like a no briner. The Rescue Airport also makes it extremely easy to fly in and out.
Again, all things to reduce stress are the key to those large racing day performances!
I have heard from a few of you on socially that you have done the salvation marathon and thought. And that was before I once called it!
What to do in salvation?
Great, so you have decided the race and now your family wants to know, what about us? Well, we have already told you about a couple of paths for walking or cycling, but let’s look at other options.
David and I found enough to enjoy, but what really surprised us was how many large concerts and acts come through this city!
There were posters for Sam Hunt and Alabama and Jane Lynch to name a few of the acts in the weeks after we left. During our time they happened to have a glowing wild setup in the botanical gardens and it was epic.
Shasta Dam
The Rescue Marathon actually starts at Dam Square and then you run along the Sacramento River Trail shown above. It is a great paved road that means no worries about cars, being close to the water is beautiful and clear how you get that great downhill.Of course starting here, you will miss the Tour. So definitely comeback with the family to really view all the information and take the time to look around. It’s just an interesting place to see and take!
For those who just want to run like Moi, you remind you that you can’t cross the Shasta Dam for only 6 hours to go on the other side trailheads.
Glowing
Ok this is a bit unfair because I know it is not always there, but there are so many events in the city. I mentioned this above, but it repeats itself.
Glowing game was absolutely as much more than we expected. If you miss it in salvation, keep your eyes open for a different location. It is interactive and fascinating at all ages. They also have a food truck park with live music, the Civic Park that organizes events from music to the annual Rodeo and more. Be sure to view the event calendar and you will find some interesting things all year round.
Turtle Bay Exploration Park
The Sheraton Rescue is an easy place to stay for your visit. It is right next to the Civic Park and the Turtle Bay Exploration Park. Moreover, it is only 1 miles from the small city center that is clearly revived and accepts some new shops and restaurants.
Turtle Bay is definitely for the children. Numerous playgrounds (I may have hoped for a zipline) and tons of birds. You can go to the parrot house where they bounce, super active and ready to eat from a nectar cup if you buy one!
Dine
Literal! We ate almost everywhere outside where we went, even in the hot summer temps with fans that it was so much fun. The sky was clean, the view was beautiful and the food was fantastic.
Branch House is located next to the Sheraton and Sundial Bridge. Although it seems like a small cafe, we actually had incredible salmon tacos and one of David’s favorite hamburgers.Downtown Checkout van de Haard for incredibly delicious cookies, right next to lighter dishes such as a large salad or sandwich. On the same market square you will also find Cinder Woodfired pizza, who has a number of unique flavors and we agree that it was also delicious. With a size of 10 inches you can get your own and exchange bites.
If that is not enough, don’t forget the park. This is a food truck court that also has live music.
It was such a nice gathering place. You would really see the community coming out and of course with 8 different trucks you have food options in abundance to satisfy everyone in the group (even those who just want a gigantic corndog).
Good Golly, some how I didn’t even talk about two of the things you have probably seen on every website that is the Sundial Bridge and Whiskeytown Lake! The bridge is really nice to see and directly in Turtle Bay, so no extra trip needed.
It was 105 during our trip, so we definitely came to the lake at the entire city! Renting a kayak and paddleboard to hang around on the lake was really the perfect way to spend an afternoon after one morning on the paths.
