With the big match due to start at 7pm under lights, Erasmus revealed that his side had not been allocated any night practice sessions, a situation he found confusing given the challenge ahead.
“We didn’t get any night training [session] before this match, I don’t know why. noting that India had two evening nets while Canada also had night training ahead of their match. Make of that what you will… but we will just stand up and do our Namibian way, which is to fight,” the Namibian captain told Cricbuzz.
The skipper’s comments underline a key concern for the African side, who have no infrastructure for daytime cricket at home and rarely get the chance to train under floodlights. Erasmus explained that few of his team’s players are regularly exposed to nighttime conditions, especially those who have played in leagues such as the ILT20 or the Nepal Premier League, while stating that it can be difficult to adapt to playing under lights.
‘We don’t have one [flood]lights in Namibia… the day/night games,” Erasmus said. “In terms of infrastructure, this is probably the challenge for us, so yeah, it’s not just something for guys who don’t have [experience]… I think apart from the guys who have played in the Nepal Premier League and the ILT20 and the World Cups we’ve played, you don’t really get used to light and train under it a lot,” he concluded.
Despite the frustration over scheduling, Erasmus stressed that his team’s focus remains on competing fiercely against the defending champions, taking on the challenge the Namibian way, ahead of a big clash for the Namibians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi.
India will take on Namibia in a crucial match for both teams’ qualification prospects. Words like these from the Namibian captain have certainly fueled the fight.
