Steve Kouleas: With Dave Pagnotta, Sirius XM Insider. Quinn Hughes, what is the realism of a future in the short, medium and, I guess, long term? And is anyone actively kicking tires right now?

NHL Rumors: Quinn Hughes is in no rush to make a decision on his future

Dave Pagnotta: I would be very surprised if something happened mid-season involving Quinn Hughes. If anything, this will be the timing when he eventually gets moved. I suspect it’s more likely to happen in the summer or closer to draft, something like that. I don’t feel like the Canucks have much of an appetite, right?

Yes, teams have been calling. They checked in to see what the status is. But he is effectively in control of his destiny as he still has a year left on his contract before he is granted UFA status. I don’t think the Canucks want to go that route now. Yes, there are definitely reports of other teams checking in and people trying to connect the dots with other teams. Most recently, this past week, it was Detroit.

But I just don’t see a scenario at this point unless they are completely blown out of left field and out of the water with a crazy offer that is way too good to pass up. I just don’t expect anything to happen during the season.

But because of all the activity surrounding the Canucks, it’s still going to be at least a bit of a topic of discussion because of what they’re going through right now and trying to move other assets.

NHL Rumors: Quinn Hughes’ situation could get interesting around the Olympics

NHL Rumors.com Note: As previously reported over the summer and as the season began, Quinn Hughes is in no rush to decide his fate in Vancouver. While serving as President of Hockey Operations Jim Rutherford poured gasoline on fire with his comments about Quinn Hughes wanting to play with his brothers, the Canucks season is going to determine a lot for the eldest Hughes brother.

Not to mention, Quinn Hughes has declared his commitment to the Vancouver Canucks and that everyone would be told their decision by July 1, 2026, when they are eligible for renewal. Everyone is linking him to the New Jersey Devils, Detroit Red Wings and Philadelphia Flyers, but how are they going to overpay without a guarantee of an extension?

Once again Quinn Hughes holds all the cards.
