Donald Trump convicted of ‘disrespectful’ attack on Rob Reiner after director’s death

US President Donald Trump has faced strong backlash after mocking Rob Reiner, the actor and legendary director, following his death.
Reiner and his wife Michele were found dead in their Los Angeles home on Sunday.
Their son, Nick Reiner, who struggled with substance abuse, has been arrested on murder charges and is being held on a $4 million bond.

Rob Reiner was known as the director of beloved films including When Harry Met Sally, The Princess Bride and Stand By Me.

Donald Trump’s message

As tributes poured in from entertainers and politicians, Trump unleashed an extraordinary broadside, suggesting Reiner had caused his own murder by criticizing the US president.

“Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once highly talented film director and comedy star, has passed away along with his wife Michele, reportedly as a result of the anger he caused in others by his massive, unyielding and incurable affliction with a mind-numbing illness known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME, also known as TDS,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Reiner, an outspoken Democrat, told Variety in 2017 that Trump was “mentally unfit” and called him “the most unqualified human being to ever assume the presidency of the United States.”

He was politically active, an outspoken supporter of progressive causes, and had warned that Trump was preparing an authoritarian takeover.

Trump, who regularly lashes out at his opponents and praises public figures who support him, has not provided any evidence that Reiner’s political views contributed in any way to the couple’s deaths.

Republican response

The comments were strongly criticized by two prominent right-wing Republicans, including Congressman Thomas Massie.
“Regardless of how you felt about Rob Reiner, this is inappropriate and disrespectful discourse about a man who was just brutally murdered,” wrote Massie, who serves a Kentucky House of Representatives district.
“This is a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Both Massie and Taylor Greene are critics of Trump, a rarity within his party.
Reiner’s death prompted an outpouring of tributes from prominent Democrats, including former President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle Obama, and former Vice President Kamala Harris.
