Dean, 29, played in 18 games for the Dodgers during the regular season, largely as a pinch-runner or defensive replacement. He also made the Dodgers’ postseason roster for each of their four postseason series in 2025.
“I’m super excited, that’s all you can ask for, an opportunity and a chance to play,” Dean said during Dodgers shortstop Mookie Betts’ Tequila bottle signing event at Canoga Park. “I am super excited to work at another good organization.”
How did Justin Dean perform in 2025?
During his 18 games with the Dodgers last season, Dean made two appearances and failed to make the mark both times. However, during his appearances as a pinch-runner, he managed to score one stolen base.
Dean did not have a single plate appearance during the postseason, despite playing in 13 of the Dodgers’ 17 playoff games, but scored the tying run in the Dodgers’ victory in Game 4 of the NLCS against the Philadelphia Phillies. He also had an iconic playoff moment in Game 6 of the World Series, raising his hands and signaling a ground rule double to prevent a run from scoring in the bottom of the ninth inning.
In Triple-A, Dean had much more success on the offensive side of the ball.
He played 90 games for Triple-A Oklahoma City, setting career-highs at the minor league level. He hit .289/.378/.431 with the Comets and had six home runs and 33 RBIs. Dean also racked up 27 stolen bases while playing in the minors.
Why isn’t Justin Dean with the Dodgers?
The Dodgers designated Dean for assignment early in the offseason, which opened the door for him to join the San Francisco Giants. Dean thanked LA and its fans after joining their division rivals.
“Thank you LA for changing my life!” Dean wrote.
But after just a few months with the Giants, they DFA him after signing Tyler Mahle. The Cubs made their move on the outfielder.
Although he is no longer in the division, the Dodgers will certainly see a lot of Dean this coming season if he remains in the National League.
