Dodgers Urged to Sign $130 Million All-Star Infielder in Free Agency

It might be a bit of an understatement to say that Bo Bichette was a major thorn in the side of the Los Angeles Dodgers during the World Series.

The 27-year-old hit .348 in the World Series, along with a .923 OPS. He hit a huge three-run homer off Shohei Ohtani in Game 7, which seemed like potentially the winning hit at the time. Bichette did all of this essentially playing on one knee.

Now that he’s on the open market as a free agent, he’s looking to cash in on a long-term deal.

ESPN’s David Schoenfield recently delved into possible offseason plans for the Dodgers. He believes LA should consider signing Bichette to a multi-year deal. Not only would it hurt World Series foe Toronto, but it would also improve the offensive quality of the lineup in the process.

In fact, Schoenfield thinks Bichette is the player who would best help the team win their third consecutive World Series title.

The Dodgers second basemen hit .239 and ranked 24th in the majors in OPS. The offense hit just .233 in the postseason — and .213 after the wild-card round. The Dodgers hit enough home runs, especially in key moments, to win the World Series, but it was the starting rotation that carried them to the title. The offense is getting older, with Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts now in the post-peak phase of their career.

“And the money? With an expected five-year contract worth $130 million, Bichette can easily fit the Dodgers’ payroll and still leave them with money to sign a closer.”

The fit is interesting. Bichette is not a good fielder, and there is some serious consideration being given to the idea that he would be better served at second base or third base. The shortstop position is filled by Betts, and he is having an excellent season with the glove.

That said, even if it’s highly likely that Bichette ends up elsewhere, the Dodgers would have no problem fitting him in somewhere given how powerful his bat is. A projected contract of $130 million would easily be within the realm of possibility given the team’s spending.
