Dodgers interested in KBO Star Sung-Mun Song: Report

Considering Max Muncy is in his mid-30s and has one year left on his current contract, the Los Angeles Dodgers could find themselves in the market for a third baseman relatively quickly.

As such, a recent report from a Korean publication raised more than a few eyebrows.

According to The Chosun newspaperthe Dodgers are considering signing Korean infielder Sun-Mun Song. While Japanese players Munetaka Murakami and Kazuma Okamoto have higher profiles, Song could ultimately be a better fit for the Dodgers.

“The postal costs for Murakami and Okamoto are too high. In contrast, Song Sung-mun’s postal value is about US$12.5 million (about 19.5 billion Korean won), only one-tenth of Murakami’s level.”

It added: “Former Kiwoom teammate Kim Ha-seong has actively encouraged Song Sung-mun to pursue a Major League challenge, and the Dodgers will likely approach him through Kim Ha-seong.”

Song, 29, has a reputation as a very solid defender with a good bat. Last year, Song hit .315 with 26 homeruns and 90 runs batted in for his ballclub Kiwoom in the KBO. This included a .917 OPS and 37 doubles. Song also struck out just 96 times in 646 at-bats.

The infielder has seen time at third base, first base and second base. As a left-handed hitter, he would provide better balance to what has been a right-handed, heavy group in recent years.

Interestingly enough, Song was teammates with Hyseong Kim before Kim went to the Dodgers this past season.

He was placed about a week ago and has until December 21 to reach an agreement with an MLB team. For the Dodgers, this could be another example of further strengthening the stranglehold the franchise has on multiple Asian markets. At the same time, Song appears to be more of a bat-to-ball player than some others who come from the continent at a fraction of the cost.

For a team always looking for premium value, Song could be the ideal player.
