Dodgers have a long history of different franchise names

Since the Los Angeles Dodgers’ historic 2025 season is far in the past at this point, what better time than now to take a look at the history of the reigning World Series champions?

Specifically, the Dodgers are a team with a long and complicated history of different names, dating back more than 100 years.

The history of the Dodgers dates back to 1883, when the club was founded as the Brooklyn Baseball Club in New York and played in the Interstate League as the Atlantics.

The team, which moved to the American Association and National League in the late 19th century, was nicknamed “the Bridegrooms” after several players married around the same time. The nickname ‘Dodgers’ dates back to 1896, when electric trolley tracks were built in front of Eastern Park, forcing fans to dodge trolley cars on their way to matches.

But even as the Dodger name came into being, the team went through several name changes before sticking with the name we know today.

After a few years with the Bridegrooms, the team’s name was changed to Brooklyn Superbas during Ned Hanlon’s time as manager, a nod to a popular vaudeville acrobatic group of the era known as Hanlon’s Superbas.

In 1914, the team adopted the name Brooklyn Robins after their longtime manager Wilbert Robinson, who managed the team from 1914-1931. Finally, in 1933, the team officially adopted the Dodgers name, which still lives on today.

It was during this era that the Dodgers won their first World Series title in 1955 in an epic crosstown showtown against the New York Yankees, who had become much more relevant over the century. In seven games, the Dodgers defeated the Yankees for the club’s first championship. Jackie Robinson, who broke the color barrier in baseball and became the first African-American player to play in the major leagues, was part of the 1955 championship team.
