Dodgers’ Brandon Gomes responds to rival comments on spending

Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Brandon Gomes responded to National League All-Stars Bryce Harper and Manny Machado, who praised the Dodgers for their offseason spending.

The Dodgers have taken control of the MLB in recent seasons and have not hesitated to spend big money on the top free agents to do so. LA, in turn, has become the biggest argument for an MLB lockout when the league’s collective bargaining agreement expires after the 2026 season.

However, Harper doesn’t believe the Dodgers are “bad for baseball.”

“I obviously love what the Dodgers do. They pay the money, they spend the money, I mean, they’re a great team. They run their team like a business, and they run it the right way. They understand where to put their money, but also – people don’t look at this either – their draft and their development is incredible.

“They draft, develop and trade those guys for big names and can spend the money. It bothers me when everyone talks about the Dodgers just spending money, no. They sign, they develop, they do it the right way.”

Machado had a similar opinion to Harper and expressed support for the way the Dodgers handled their offseason affairs.

“I think it’s great,” Machado said of the Dodgers’ spending. “Every team should do it. …S- is great for the game. So I think every team has the ability to do it, so I hope all 30 teams can learn from that.”

When asked if the praise from rival players served as validation for him, Gomes said the Dodgers aren’t looking outside the organization for validation.

“The validation is winning championships and fielding the best team possible every year,” Gomes said. “All we try to do is get a little better every season with the aim of winning championships.

The Dodgers have done well in achieving their goals if that’s the case, as they’ve won two straight championships and consistently dominated the NL West.

What signings have the Dodgers made this offseason?

The Dodgers have once again bolstered their team with big names after winning a championship, bringing in All-Stars Edwin Diaz and Kyle Tucker to further strengthen their stacked roster.

Diaz signed a three-year, $69 million deal with the Dodgers during the Winter Meetings and will become the Dodgers’ new closer. Tucker signed a four-year deal worth $240 million and is a perfect fit in the Dodgers’ outfield.

In addition to their high-profile signings, the Dodgers also brought back Miguel Rojas, Kiké Hernandez and Evan Phillips, all of whom will play important complementary roles in the upcoming season.

With their new signings, the Dodgers look to continue to validate themselves and win a third straight World Series championship, earning the first three-peat in franchise history.
