Taking tea tree oil can lead to life-threatening organ damage, epileptic seizures and even a coma, has warned a doctor.

According to Dr. Sermed Mezher, a doctor based in the UK, can lead the swallowing small quantities of the essential oil serious poisoning within a minute.

In an Instagram video That has been viewed more than 2.1 million times so far, Dr. Mezher explained the risks in response to a video of a young boy who ended up in a coma after swallowing.

Dr. Mezher said, “Swallowing tea tree oil can be very toxic because of the powerful chemical composition, which includes Terpinen-4-Ol, Cineole and other fleeting connections.”

Terpinen-4-Ol is the most common connection in tea oil oil-from the Melaleuca alternifolia-tree extracted-this antifungal and anti-inflammatory properties.

However, when taken, the oil can quickly influence the nervous system, leading to sleepiness, loss of coordination and attacks.

In 2022 alone, the US Poison Control Center treated more than 2,200 cases of toxicity linked to tea tree oil.

“One of them was a 23-month-old boy who only drank 10 ml who brought him into a coma for five hours until he happily recovered,” Dr. Mezher out.

Dr. Mezher urges people to think twice about keeping this essential oil in the house, especially if they have children or pets

He added that the supposed benefits for skin health can also be fake.

“Tree oil has been sold as a panacea for multiple skin conditions, and yet there is very little evidence that it works,” he said.

A 2023 study showed that tea tree oil has antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties that helped in the treatment of teenage and adult acne, although researchers warned that it was not possible to draw conclusions about its safety.

The poison control center treated twice as many cases of toxicity caused by tea tree oil compared to other essential oil, including cinnamon, clove and eucalyptus oil.

“I don’t know how you are, but I don’t keep this at home,” warned Dr. Mezher.

In addition to attacking the nervous system, taking the ‘horribly toxic’ product can also irritate the gastrointestinal tract, causing nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

“Tea Tree Oil is also hard on the liver,” Dr. Mezher.

“The body is struggling to metabolize its toxic components, which may lead to organ damage with repeated or high dose of exposure.”

‘Because tea tree oil absorbs quickly into the bloodstream, poisoning symptoms can appear within a few minutes to a few hours.

“If intake occurs, immediate medical attention is essential to prevent serious complications.”

The NHS warns against trying to make someone who has swallowed something toxic and unconsciously ill, and recommends placing them in the repair position instead until an ambulance arrives.

Tea Tree Oil, a common ingredient in many skin care products, is previously linked to a number of super bug infections, including MRSA a type of bacteria that is resistant to treatment and life-threatening infection.

American scientists discovered that repeated use of the low dose of the essential oil made the MRSA bacteria, as well as E.coli and Salmonella, more resistant to antibiotics.

Professor David McDowell, from the University of Ulster, warned that people who repeatedly use tea tree oil on their skin to treat acne can ’emphasize’ the bacteria on the skin instead of killing – increasing their resistance to antibiotics.

“Although tea tree oil can be an effective antimicrobial agent when it is used correctly at high concentrations, it can contribute to the development of antibiotic resistance in human pathogens at low concentrations,” he warned.
