Everyone wants more power in their golf swing (myself included). With more power the game becomes just one little bit easier.
The problem is, there’s no magic pill you can take to add more pop to your swing. If you really want to add yards to your game, you have to be willing to put in the effort.
Speed training and improved fitness are two of the most common ways you can increase your strength, but you can also pursue a third method: improved technique.
In the video below, GOLF Top 100 teacher Brian Mogg explains a simple adjustment you can make to your swing that will help you improve your technique and add easy yards to your game.
A swing tweak for more power
To create power, you must produce the correct load in your swing. And one way you can do that is by hinging your wrists properly.
“Your wrists are a huge source of power during the swing,” says Mogg. “I see so many golfers who drag it, set it too late and collapse, and they wonder why they’re not hitting it far enough.”
The answer is usually that they don’t know how to hinge their wrists correctly. So, how can you hinge your wrists properly? Mogg has a few tips.
“It feels like your thumbs are pointing up [during the backswing]” says Mogg. “It feels like the handle is pointing downwards. It feels like you’re creating some wrinkles in your hindquarters. All three of these things make for a very effective swing.”
When you place your wrists in the backswing, the clubhead will feel light. And with a light clubhead you can unload it and unleash some serious power.
“Do you golfers want to hit further there?” says Mogg. “You have to put weight on your wrists.”
Do that and you will discover strength you never knew you had.
