Match play events, although few and far in, prove time and again that Golf is a deep emotional game. It is a sport that challenges its own mental power as much as physical skills. Threst an opponent in the mix and some golfers can struggle, but others come to the opportunity. The Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black brought both lows and heroic moments for some of the largest players in the world.
The love of the players for the country is an important theme of the Ryder Cup, and it is also the most important tenant who controls the Simpson Cup this week, a different passionate game play event.
The Simpson Cup is an annual tournament between teams of injured soldiers and veterans from the United States and Great Britain. Just like the Ryder Cup, players in both teams spend the year working to qualify for their teams.
“This is the cream of the crop,” said Mike Browne, a scratch golf player who lost his left leg that served in the 29 command regiment of the British army. “It means a lot for many of us, it’s great.”
Some players at the Simpson Cup are amputants, often the result of Ied’s or Mortier explosions while serving in Iraq or Afghanistan. Many of the veterans are about serious depression or PTSD. But they all see golf as a lifeline, an important part of their rehabilitation, both mentally and physically.
“We all have a special band around Golf and the Army,” said US Army SPC Chad Pfeifer, who runs the track with a prosthetic left leg. “This brings everyone together; the Simpson Cup is one of the best events.”
This year Pit The Competition Team USA and Team GB against each other for a day of four -ball matches in Prince’s Golf Club in Kent, England and a day of Singles matches next door at the legendary Royal St. George’s.
In 2024 the Simpson Cup came to the thread of Shinnecock Hills. After the Americans had taken a 4-2 lead in the four balls, a strong British effort forced a draw of 9.5-9.5. The general series is blinded at 6-6, with the last two games that end in tires. The event visits some of the largest locations in Golf: TPC Sawgrass, Congressional, St. Andrews, Baltusrol and Royal Birkdale, to name just a few.
Competitors involved in the Simpson Cup are all members of the On Course FoundationThose wounded veterans helps in both American and Great Britain jobs in the wave industry.
