Andrei Arlovski breaks off the confrontation with influencer Jack Doherty. The backstage incident during the Jake Paul vs. Anthony Joshua fight in Miami on December 19 caught everyone’s attention, but what came next revealed the real story. Andrei Arlovski, the 46-year-old former UFC heavyweight champion, broke his silence during a conversation with MMAfightingand his perspective cuts through the social media chaos surrounding the altercation with streamer Jack Doherty and his crew.
What made Jack Doherty think he could walk to a UFC legend? Andrei Arlovski explains
This is what happened, according to Arlovski himself. He was heading to the parking lot with his wife, son and a pregnant friend when Jack Doherty’s group showed up. Someone bumped his friend and then his wife. When Arlovski asked what was going on, things escalated. His bodyguard got involved, his friends jumped in, and within seconds it became the kind of backstage brawl that gets cut and reshared on every platform by morning.
What stood out to Arlovski wasn’t the fight itself. It was the reaction afterwards. “I woke up the next morning and didn’t understand what was going on,” he explained to Helwani. “A lot of people sent me good text messages, phone calls – ‘you are a hero, you are the people’s champion’, etc., etc.” He was surprised that he had never received so much attention after real UFC fights. The moment went viral for two days, after which Doherty essentially disappeared from the conversation.
But what really bothered the former UFC heavyweight champion Arlovsky There was something deeper: the lack of respect for his profession. “I don’t think that guy is a super nice person, Jake Doherty, whatever his name is,” he said. “What surprised me and why I was disappointed is that no one tried to stop the fight. Everyone started recording things.” No security intervention until it already happened. Just people with phones trying to capture content.
“I got that bodyguard to hit me because for some reason I thought they were people from the crowd who had just gotten lost. I was between his accident and one punch. After the first punch I was like, ‘What is that…?’ At the second blow I started chasing him. Someone threw some punches from behind and it wasn’t fun. I really appreciate it and am very proud of my wife and my son. They stood up for me and tried to save my soul. That’s the only memorable moment – I’m very excited and proud of that.”
Arlovski went there frustrated but collected as he discussed why someone with Doherty’s online presence would provoke a confrontation in the first place. “You have over 25 years of experience in this industry,” he said. “Do you think I’m stupid enough to start something with some kids? The video shows what happened. I asked what was going on and was immediately punched.”
“It’s not like you’ve been training hard in the boxing gym for the past month or doing MMA. People spend their whole lives there. It’s a kind of disrespect for professional athletes,” he explained. “I’ve spent the last 25 years in the gym non-stop, not once, but two or three times a day.
“Come on. You think you’re superhuman, you can come and do… I don’t know what’s going on. I try to watch my mouth, don’t say bad words, but it’s not cool. Let’s put it this way: not cool at all. I’m not going to try to play professional football now because I’m big, I think I’m strong and I’m a genius – obviously not. Because you can see people getting hurt there.”
