Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner both moved the fourth round in Wimbledon with dominant victories on Saturday, while title defender Barbora Krejcikova was eliminated in a shock result.
Djokovic reaches 100 victories at Wimbledon
Novak Djokovic showed his class again when he beat colleague Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 6-3, 6-0, 6-4 in just under two hours. The victory was his 100th victory in Wimbledon, as a result of which he placed Navratilova and Roger Federer alongside tennis legends Martina.
The 38-year-old sevenfold Wimbledon champion looked sharp from the start and ended rallies with powerful foundations and smart mains play. One striking moment arrived late in the first set when Djokovic won an exciting exchange with a diving backhand -volley, which brought the midfield audience.
He ran through the second set, did not drop any match, and despite a late push from Kecmanovic in the third, Djokovic remained calm and served the game.
He now faces Alex de Minaur in the next round, after the Australian August Holmgren defeated in straight sets.
Sinner Powers past Martinez
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner also continued his strong form and defeated Spain Pedro Martinez 6-1, 6-3, 6-1. Sinner dominated from the start, hit 46 winners and dropped only seven games in total.
Martinez had a small chance in the second set, but did not succeed in taking his breaking points. Sinner then took full control and never left his opponent back in the game.
The Italian now meets Grigor Dimitrov, who also won in straight sets.
Swiatek shines, Krejcikova sent home
Iga Swiatek remained on track for her first Wimbledon title with a solid 6-2, 6-3 victory over Danielle Collins. The Polish star, sown eighth, played with confidence and made very few mistakes and checked the game from the basic line.
After the game, Swiateek said: “I was in the zone. I played quickly and took the check early. It is the best I have felt on grass so far.”
But there was a heartache for defending champion Barbora Krejcikova, who lost 6-2, 3-6, 4-6 to the American Emma Navarro. Krejcikova looked uncomfortable during the third set and had to be checked by medical staff. At one point she was seen in tears at the back of the field.
Although she held five breaking points, she could not take them and she was broken in her last service game. Navarro now plays Mirra Andreeva, who beats Hailey Baptiste 6-1, 6-3.
What is the following
With Djokovic, Sinner and Swiateek all in the fourth round, the second week of Wimbledon promises more excitement. But for Krejcikova, her defending defense is emotionally over.
