The parents of Norman, surgeon Robert Charles William Alexander Lindsay from Ireland, and Jane Elizabeth, daughter of a Wesleyan missioning, Wed in the church in May 1869, the local newspaper The Ballarat Star reported.

Five of the 10 children of the couple grew up to artists and writers, in particular at Australian cultural life, according to the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
