Colton Herta could be on the move to Formula 2 in 2026 to chase more Super License points for a future Formula 1 drive, Racer understands.
The IndyCar star racet for TWG Motorsports-Retti, and was connected to one of the Cadillac F1 seats, but every external chance of being terminated one was terminated due to its lack of a FIA Super license. Provided that Kyle Kirkwood participates in Sunday’s race in Nashville, Herta cannot finish higher than sixth in the Indycar classification of this year-worthy he would stay at 37 of the required 40 points-and he could theoretically fall outside the top 10, for a total of three years 31.
As a step on the F1 Feeder Series -Ladder offers the required 40 points for the top three finishers in the championship, with double digits for the entire top six. Of extra value, the entire races on the F1-Underm card, with racing weekends on 14 of the 24 Grand Prix locations this year, while also uses Pirelli tires with high breakdown.
Herta raced earlier in Europe in 2015 and 2016, but never participated in the official F1 Feeder series of F2 or F3.
With Cadillac who has committed to the experienced combination of Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas for his debut season in F1, placing nine times Indycar winner Herta in F2 would give a chance to acquire further knowledge of the series and to work closely with the team, preparing him for a future racing chair.
Racer has knowledge of several teams in F2 that is approached about the possibility of running Herta, but it is not yet clear whether there have been discussions in an agreement. Andretti should protect a replacement for Herta in Indycar before he punishes such a movement, and Will Power is considered one of the options.
The exploration of a move to F2 for Herta Tallies with comments from TWG Motorsports CEO Dan Towriss during the announcements regarding Perez and Bottas at the start of this week, when he said: “It is important for us to ensure that there is a path for an American driver in Formula 1, and we will work on it”.
At that time, when he was immediately asked if he is considering placing Herta in F2, Towriss replied: “No, that’s not what we are reporting today, no.”
