Liverpool Ace Diogo Jota spoke on the phone with the president of Gondomar SC, his boys’ club, just a few hours before his tragic death. The President of the Outfit revealed that Jota ‘went through a happy moment’ during the call.
Tragedy struck in the early hours on Thursday morning when the 28-year-old Reds star Jota and his 26-year-old brother Andre Silva died after a fatal car accident on the A-52 highway in the province of Zamora, Spain.
The couple was on the way to the port of Santander to take a ferry back to England after Jota was advised not to fly in the light of the recent pulmonary operation. “We spoke almost every week and I know he was going through a happy moment. When Diogo had to train during the low season, he would ask to get here and we would always make everything available.
“His brother would usually also come, and they would both train. It is difficult to talk at the moment, but what will remain is the image of two very modest people who leave a huge void.”
Gondomar is located near the Portuguese city of Porto. It is where Jota called at home, and it was here that Jota married his long -term partner Rute Cardoso two weeks before his death, with whom he had three children.
He and his brother’s funeral will take place on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. A wake will take place in Sao Cosme Chapel for a funeral service in the Igreja Matriz de Gondomar.
There are countless tribute to the Late Liverpool star, from former teammates, managers, clubs and fans. Folders gathered in Anfield and have left flowers and tokens of their admiration.
Reds captain Virgil van Dijk was one of the many who released a message that Jota remembered, as he wrote on Instagram: “Man, I can’t believe it, I don’t want to believe it. Absolutely destroyed and in total disbelief. What a person, what a player, but especially an incredible family man.
“You meant so much for all of us and you will always do that! For your family to lose two sons, a husband and a father is just unimaginable. So cruel and unfair. My heart breaks for all your beautiful family, for RUTE and for your children.
“I promise you in these difficult times and further we will always be there for your family. A champion forever, number 20 forever. It has been a privilege to be on the field by your side and your friend has been off. We will miss you without words and will never forget. Your legacy will live, we will be sure!
