India and Australia will lock Hoorns together in an ODI series of three competitions and a five-match T20i series, with Kohli and Rohit in the 50-over format, because it is the only size in which they are active.

The duo was last seen in action for India in International Cricket in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where they played a crucial role in the team’s triumph.

Despite leading India to back-to-back ICC Tournament Triumphs, the BCCI has decided to dismiss Rohit Sharma and replaced him as a odi skipper by Shubman Gill

This means that both Rohit and Kohli will travel with the team to Australia as pure batters and will play under the leadership of Shubman Gill, which since 2016 will be the first instance that Kohli and Rohit will play together under another supplier.

I feel that you cannot know or judge the shape and fitness of such players – Dilip Vengsarkar

In an interaction with afternoon, Dilip Vengsarkar said that Kohli and Rohit have been great players for India, but assessing their fitness and shape is difficult because they only play one size.

“Rohit and Virat have been great players over the years, but if you only play one format of the game, I believe that the selectors should call this. I feel that you cannot know or judge the shape and fitness of such players because they had a long dismissal after the last game they played. It is very difficult to judge their form and fitness.

Dilip Vengsarkar also believed that the Rohit and Kohli selection committee chose the ODIs of Australia, mainly because of their success in the past. He said:

“Rohit and Virat may have been chosen because of their great records. They have been great players and have done Yeoman service to Indian Cricket, after they have won many matches in all sizes of the game.”

It is really up to the selectors whether they want to stay with Rohit and Virat – Dilip Vengsarkar

Dilip Vengsarkar further emphasized how the number of ODI matches that is being played has decreased considerably. He added:

“But because they have not played a test match and T20s and only play one size, one-day matches, which are not often played during the season, it is very difficult to gauge their shape and fitness. But because they have been picked, the selectors may have checked that, although I don’t know how.”

The Indian legend also told the selection committee indirectly to tend to all-format players and to go further from Rohit and Kohli.

“It is really up to the selectors whether they want to stay with Rohit and Virat or want to look ahead and give opportunities to those players available for all formats of the game. It depends on how they look at the Indian cricket that continues,” concluded Vengsarkar.
