Especially since he has to be in action during the rest of the season away from the team.
Diamondbacks GM expects a resolution to the Ketel Marte situation very soon
Hazen said Steve Gilbert of MLB.com Tuesday that he will most likely put an end to all speculation in very short order, and that he has always believed a trade would be a gamble.
“I haven’t figured that out yet,” Hazen said of the exact timeline. “But this isn’t going to stick. We have to focus in the offseason. Again, my feeling the whole time was that [a trade of Marte] wouldn’t happen, and I think it seems likely that that is the case and we want to focus on other things that we need to do.
The 32-year-old Marte has been one of the best hitters in baseball in recent years and would be an incredible upgrade for any team that acquires him. He would also be a key trade chip for the Diamondbacks and potentially help them upgrade their pitching staff.
He is owed $91 million over the next five years on his current contract, which is a pretty good deal for an infielder who hits like he does.
That also makes him extremely valuable to the Diamondbacks as a buildable player and potential trade chip. But the fact that Marte hasn’t moved yet, and Hazen’s desire to get it sorted, seems to indicate he’s not getting the kind of offers he wants.
Perhaps making this public is an attempt to negotiate through the media and put pressure on other general managers. Sort of a “if you want him, it’s time to get serious with your offers” kind of thing. It could also just be Hazen trying to put everything in place so he can focus on other moves this offseason. Either way, it looks like Marte is about to finally be traded, or taken off the trade block.
