South Africa go into the series on the back of a stunning Test series win and are said to be high on confidence, while India are looking for revenge. South Africa decided to rest their skipper, Tamba Bavuma, and Aiden Markram took the field as skipper of the Proteas.
Although they couldn’t get off to a great start as Indian veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli put together a huge century partnership for the second wicket, they have managed to pull it back to some extent in the middle overs after dismissing Rohit, followed by new batsman Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Dewwad Brevis takes a stunner to dismiss Ruturaj Gaikwad on Odi’s return
Ruturaj Gaikwad made his return to the Indian side after a long wait. With his sheer dominance in the unofficial ODI against South Africa A, he had convinced the Indian management that this would be the right time to bring him in after Shreyas Iyer’s injury.
Gaikwad struggled to score runs with ease and tried to cut a ball slightly outside off-stump, but Ottneil Baartman’s ball again stayed low and Dewald Brevis at backward point was on hand to pull off an absolute stunner. When Virat Kohli saw Brevis taking off a blinder with one hand, he was left absolutely amazed.

South Africa were electric on the pitch
After Rohit Sharma was dropped by Tony de Zorzi, the Proteas were electrifying on the field. Their ground fielding has been simply fantastic as they have pushed boundaries, controlled the scoring rate and taken stunning grabs at times.
Dewald Brevis was very sporadic in his region, as were Aiden Markram, Marco Jansen and even Tony de Zorzi after the catch drop. He was great on the ball. He has sprinted, saved singles and limited the boundaries to 2’s and 3’s.
Virat Kohli is closing in on his 52nd ODI ton
Even after Rohit Sharma’s dismissal, Virat Kohli has looked confident even as the scoring rate has dropped tremendously as both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Washington Sundar are unwilling to regularize the attack between the two sides.
Kohli, the greatest ever Indian player in ODI cricket, has more hundreds than the Little Master Sachin Tendulkar in this format. After his 51 ODI centuries, Kohli is eyeing a 52nd at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi. Regardless, he has scored back-to-back half-centuries after back-to-back ducks in Australia.
With this kind of performance, Kohli would be assured of his place in India’s 2027 ICC World Cup squad.
