Maharashtra Congress Head Harshwardhan Sapkal led to a political storm by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis comparing with the Mughal -Emperor Aurangzeb and called both “cruel rulers” who used religion for power. His comments pulled a sharp recoil from the BJP, which accused the congress of insulting the identity of Maharashtra and sinking to a new layer in political discourse.
“Aurangzeb was a cruel ruler. He stuck his own father in prison and always used religion as a tool,” said Sapkal. “Nowadays Devendra Fadnavis is just as cruel. He also takes the help of religion. That is why the board of Aurangzeb and Devendra Fadnavis is the same.”
Maharashtra BJP Chief Chandrashhekhar Bawankule responded strongly and rejected Sapkal’s comments as “extremely childish and irresponsible”, with the argument that the congress had affected the political culture of the state.
“By comparing Aurangzeb with Devendraji Fadnavis, the Congress insults the identity of Maharashtra,” said Bawankule. BJP MLC candidate Sanjay Kenekar went one step further and stated that the congress had become “irrelevant” in his opposition against Hindus. “He not only made himself shame, but also his party. They have fallen so low that it is necessary to take them to a mental asylum,” he added.
The controversy comes in the midst of a continuous row above Aurangzeb in Maharashtra, who broke out last month after the Samajwadi party leader Abu azmi praised the mughal -emperorcalled him a “capable manager” whose rule in history was incorrectly presented.
Azmi’s comments, which came during his criticism of the representation of Aurangzeb in the Marathi film ‘Chhava ‘has activated an enormous return. He had claimed that India was called the “Golden Bird” during the reign of Aurangzeb and that the economy of the country at the time was 24% of the global GDP.
His comments led to a political commotion, in which Maharashtra Vice Prime Minister Eknath Shindy demanded his suspension of the meeting. In the midst of increasing pressure, Azmi later withdrew his statement and claimed that his words were twisted. However, the damage was caused because police issues were submitted against him and he had to secure anticipatory bail of a court in Mumbai.
