It was a good round and a bogey-free, but Rory Mcilroy says it could have been so much better.
McIlroy shot a four-year 68 in the K Club on Saturday and is now in the fight to claim his second Irish Open title, because he goes to Sunday four shots behind 54-hole leader Adrien Saddier.
“I ran from the 18th Green, I told Harry that this is probably the most frustrating four-under-par-round wave that I have played for a while,” said McIlroy on Saturday. “I had a lot of opportunities. It was flooding at the end. I felt that I gave myself a lot of opportunities, a number of good puts that did not go inside. Had a nice one that dropped at the age of 14.
“I feel that I just tried to keep myself in the narrow position all day.
McIlroy made Birdies on 4 and 5, added another at 14 and made his last at 18, the third time he gap this week.
He made four bogeys and opened on Thursday with 71, although he still has to make a bogey in his last two rounds. He shot 66 on Friday to go back to the Leaderboard and remained at a striking distance after his Saturday round.
“I felt that I got it right,” he said. “I hit the tee again. But yes, the wind caught me a few times. When it was, I think that it is also difficult that the greens are so soft, so you try to get balls out of the sky, so that they don’t spin so much. But if it is a bit to judge a few. Times, but yes, maybe I have done the last few days.”
McIlroy won the Irish Open in 2016 but has to win another. He is still looking for his first victory since he completed the Grand Slam career at the Masters in April. He also has an important event that he is preparing for later this month – winning a road Ryder Cup in New York.
But for now he is aimed at another round in Ireland.
“If I can start tomorrow quickly and put a little busy on the boys behind it, I am hopefully nine in the back of the fight,” he said.
You can view the last round of the Irish Open from 7.30 am to 12.30 pm on Sunday on Golf Canal.
