England’s white ball As Butler says he is far from thinking about retirement even after becoming the most successful men’s cricketer in England history across all formats. The 35-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman, who recently surpassed James Anderson’s record, insists his hunger to wear the Three Lions shirt remains as strong as ever.

Buttler, who made his international debut in a T20 against India in 2011, was passed over James Anderson‘s total when he received his 402nd cap against Sri Lanka on Sunday. With 57 Tests, 199 ODIs and 146 T20Is to his name, he sits at the top of the English charts heading into 2026.

Reflecting on the milestone, Buttler said it all still feels a bit surreal to him as he reflects on his epic career for England.

“It’s a bit surreal. That hunger and desire to play for England is always strong and burns bright. It’s amazing to think of that boy who had just bitten your hand off for one game for England, to have played 400 games,” he told Yahoo Sports.

Buttler’s longevity at the top is not just about numbers, it is rooted in his drive to improve. He also highlighted his pride in representing England on cricket’s biggest stages, from World Cup final heroics to franchise successes around the world.

“I think the obvious one is the 2019 World Cup final. Yes, it will be my favorite day and it will take something special,” he said when asked about his favorite match.

Buttler laments missed opportunities in Test cricket

The 35-year-old further expressed his regret at not achieving the same success as he did in the limited-overs despite playing 57 Tests for England.

“I always felt like I was a little bit short of where I wanted to be in Test cricket. For me, Test cricket was the pinnacle and being a kid from 2005, that was always the case. I think Test cricket can challenge you in every way the game of cricket can. I see that as the ultimate test,” Buttler concluded.

The right-hander remains England’s crucial player when it comes to the shorter versions and will be keen to contribute in the upcoming T20 World Cup.
