Utah Jazz alumnus Jae Crowder certainly got everyone’s attention when he proclaimed that the NBA is in a “weird place” and then insinuated that the game is no longer as complex as it used to be. Among those who understood where Crowder was coming from was his former Jazz teammate Derrick Favors.
Crowder, true to his character, gave his unfiltered thoughts on the current state of the NBA (which happened to be the year after his final season in the league), claiming it was different than the season he played in.
I don’t understand basketball anymore! Everything we have been taught no longer matters! https://t.co/kqBQS4nTYR

Favors, who played with Crowder for his entire short tenure with the Jazz, seemed to agree with his former teammates’ sentiment about today’s NBA.

Unlike Crowder, Favors elaborated on his thoughts on the issue. He gave a clearer picture of what the league is about now, compared to when he played.
No, we can just go to the 2020s, one guard dribble iso high screen pnr, everyone stands, no defense and social media personalities can play the sport😂

I agree and not because I was playing at the time! I think 2010-2018 is similar to the era of the 90s and 2000s

I feel the same

Of course, it’s hard not to think that these are former players who are sour about no longer playing in the league. Favors hasn’t been in the NBA since 2022, while Crowder literally last played (and barely played) last year. In the case of Favors, however, he makes his point known, but also makes it clear that he still thinks the league is a good product.
Favors still thinks the NBA is in a good place
Favors may be fair, but his recent thoughts are a bit more optimistic than Crowder’s. He made his point very clear about the league: he still thinks the NBA is great, but it’s different than the league he played in.
It still is!! NBA is still a great product! It’s just basketball that has changed

Even as he made some comments about how the NBA is compared now to when he played, Favors made it clear that he doesn’t think the league has gotten worse, just that it has changed. In fact, he even acknowledged that players who came before him probably felt the same way about his time in the NBA.
Maybe he did. Just my opinion.

The overarching point is that the NBA won’t stay the same. It’s different than when Favors played, and in ten years it will probably be very different than it is now. It’s a bit like fashion doesn’t stay the same, it changes, and when it does, everyone adapts.
Favors has never been afraid to speak his mind, and he likes to speak his mind, even if it goes against the prevailing narrative. For example, he has always talked about how much he loved his time in Utah, which is reportedly one of the worst player situations.
Best of all, Favors didn’t just say this to get clicks. He clearly had something to say and wanted to elaborate on it. Nowadays it’s cool to see that he didn’t just say this because he wanted to get everyone’s attention.
