Decision looms if sharks are willing to trade Kiefer Sherwood

It doesn’t sound like Kiefer Sherwood is staying in San Jose. At the very least, the Sharks are considering flipping the lead before the trade deadline on March 6, which could be a surprise considering the franchise is just five points out of the playoff mix.

But the team is going in the wrong direction and has lost four in a row. Sherwood has played just two games for the team and a decision needs to be made on his future. As a pending UFA, if a contract extension doesn’t materialize, the Sharks should know they can get something valuable for him in the coming days. “The Sharks are open to the possibility of turning Sherwood if they cannot sign him,” says Pierre LeBrun wrote in The Athletic on Friday. “It is more likely that he will be moved if the Sharks cannot extend him in the coming week.”

The Sherwood camp’s asking for a new deal is around $30 million. That number apparently set the Sharks back a bit. They understood that an increase was appropriate, but this went beyond what they expected. LeBrun writes, “I feel like the first contract renewal conversation was a truly transgressive moment in terms of expectations on both sides.”

Kiefer Sherwood Sharks trade flip

The Sharks have only a few days left to decide Sherwood’s fate

San Jose might be better off flipping his $1.5 million AAV right now and getting a good return for him while demand for his services is still high. LeBrun also writes, “I think an extension and Sherwood staying in San Jose is the best-case scenario for everyone involved. And I think Sherwood wants to stay.”

For San Jose to move on, the Sharks need to get at least two second-round picks. That’s what they paid for him when GM Mike Grier attempted to acquire him from the Vancouver Canucks.
