In the room of two years, the perceptions of the coaching capacity of Vlatko Andonovski Wild are fluctuating. In the summer of 2023 he supervised the earliest world cup exit in the history of the United States Women’s National Team. In the present he leads a current side of Kansas City that stands head and shoulders above the rest of the National Women’s Soccer League.
How could a coach be so successful in one job, fell flat in another? It is a mystery, but not someone who is missing for theories.
The most important difference between national team and club is the time in training. Where club coaches can work with talent on a daily, week to week basis, there are long spells in which national team coaches do not communicate with their players. This is a big reason why many coaches, especially those who like to have complete autonomy and players develop the neighborhood of the international arena: they would be driven crazy without regular contact on the field and the opportunity to impose themselves on their teams.
It is true that some coaches simply do not thrive in the international environment. But time on the training field is not the only reason.
