Quinton de Kock says returning to the Proteas set-up has reignited his childhood passion for representing South Africa and given him a new sense of purpose alongside a new generation of teammates.
After taking a break from international cricket, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman has made his comeback in the T20 series against Pakistan, and he admits that the feeling of donning the green and gold again has been ‘refreshing’.
“What I have missed most is of course the camaraderie,” said De Kock. “I think I forgot that niche a bit as a kid who grew up to be a Proteas cricketer. After a short break from the team, that childhood dream came back.”
The 31-year-old added that one of the biggest changes since his last appearance for South Africa is the number of new faces in the squad.
“Now I’m playing with a whole bunch of youngsters, new guys, new coaching staff – so it’s quite refreshing. I’m making some new friends now and trying to find my feet again.”
De Kock’s return comes under the leadership of head coach Shukri Conrad, a relationship he says is built on honesty and simplicity.
“I like playing under him. He’s a very honest and straightforward coach. I really like the way he thinks about the game. He keeps things simple, and that’s generally my type of thing.”
After once being one of the youngest in the team, De Kock now finds himself in the role of senior player and mentor – something he embraces.
“When I started, Dale Steyn was one of the big guys I was close to. He taught me a few lessons that have really helped my career. Now a few youngsters have asked me questions about improving their game, and I’m happy to help where I can, a bit like what Dale did for me.”
Despite his relaxed attitude, De Kock maintains that his ambitions remain high.
“I told Shukri I want to play for the Proteas for as long as possible. Obviously in that timeline I’d like to play a few World Cups. I’m still quite fit, my body feels great, so I’m going to keep it going for as long as I can.”
However, his focus remains on consistency and contribution rather than guarantees.
“If I’m selected, I think I can be one of those leading players heading into the next showpiece event. But I still have to get here and score points. Let’s get that job done first and then see where we can go from there.”
For now, De Kock is simply enjoying being back in the Proteas dressing room, rediscovering his love for the game and helping shape the next generation of South African cricketers.
