New TB -skin test by the Government of Kerala ensures a simple and precise diagnosis

  • The health department of Kerala started using a new skin test called CY-TB to find and treat TB infection after he has a decision to concentrate on the treatment of hidden tuberculosis under the national TB elimination program.
  • TB infection is not the same as active TB disease because a person with TB infection has the TB disease germs in their bodies, but the germs sleep, so they have no symptoms and do not spread it to others.
  • If TB infection is not treated, five to ten out of one hundred infected people can later get active TB disease when the defense system of their body becomes weak. This can occur within a few weeks after infection or can take a few years to develop.
  • A study among people in the Thiruvanantanthapuram district in 2023 showed that 20.5% of adults had TB infection, which shows how often hidden tuberculosis is in the population in this area.
  • The researchers checked the blood of 396 adults to find out if they had TB infection. They saw that the number of people with an infection became higher as age increased, from 11.5% that reached between 18 and 35 years and 30.3% in people over 58 years.
  • From 2021, Kerala used a blood-based test called Interferon Gamma Release Assay to detect TB infection, but this test needed advanced laboratory facilities and people often had to wait for their test results.
  • CY-TB is a simple, exact and simple skin test where 0.1 ml TB-specific proteins in the skin are injected on the inside of the forearm to find out whether the person has a hidden TB infection.
  • If an increased surface of five millimeters or more comes within forty-eight to two hours after the injection, this means that the person has TB infection in his body.
  • People can have the CY-TB test done in district stubs, Taluk hospitals, certain hospitals at block level and all dialysis centers, and this is currently also offered in many large private hospitals in Kerala.
