The Prime accused in the cyber fraud case in which an older couple was involved in Karnataka’s Belagavi, who die them by suicide, is less than a month after he had scammed RS 50 Lakh of them.

The accused Chirag Jevarajbhai Lakkad was arrested from Gujarat’s Surat after research by the cyber, economic and narcotics crime police. He, together with other cyber criminals, had cheated the older couple of almost RS 50 Lakh.

The police said that the accused acted as a central officer of the Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and extorted money via video calls during operating from Surat. Authorities discovered that RS 6 Lakh had been transferred to his account, led to various other accounts with more funds.

On March 27, Diogjeron Santan Nazareth (82) and his wife Flaviana (79), inhabitants of Belagavi’s Khanapur, were found dead in their house. A handwritten death notice of two pages that Diogjeron left behind declared their decision to end their lives and asked that nobody was blamed because they did not want to live on someone’s grace, the police said.

In the Death Note, Diogjeron mentioned two individuals – Sumit Birra and Anil Yadav. He wrote that Birra, who claimed to be official from the Telecom Department from New Delhi, informed him that a SIM card had been bought fraudulently in his name and was used for intimidation and illegal advertisements. Birra later transferred the call to Yadav, who claimed to be from the crime branch.

Yadav demanded details of the ownership and finances of Diogjeron and endangered legal consequences for the alleged abuse of the SIM card, according to the Death Note, the police said.

Diogjeron fell prey to the scam, switched more than RS 50 Lakh, but they continued to demand more, the police added, referring to digital transaction files. He also mentioned a gold loan from RS 7.15 Lakh, with interest on June 4.

Diogjeron also stated that he had borrowed money from friends and asked to be repaid to be repaid by selling the golden bracelets and earrings of his wife. He also expressed a wish for their bodies to be served at a medical institution for students to study.

Lakkad was arrested for accusation of online fraud and incentive to suicide.
