In November, the Davis Cup will once again crown the best tennis team in the world. The finals will take place in Bologna, Italy. The Italians are the current title holders, after two wins in a row in recent editions.

The host country makes its debut on Wednesday, November 19 in the quarter-finals against Austria. Will Sinner play in Bologna?

Italy’s success in recent years has been due to the revival of national tennis, with a trio of great players dominating the scene in recent years, such as Jannik Sinner, Matteo Berrettini and Lorenzo Musetti. Italy captain Filippo Volandri would be happy to have the world number 2 at his disposal, but he knows the player wants to be in top form for the Australian Open and is considering a stop immediately after the ATP Finals, scheduled for the week before the Davis Cup matches.

For now, it is very likely that the players called by Volandri will be Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori for doubles, while the singles specialist will be Musetti and Flavio Cobolli. Sinner could join the team or – should he decline – Berrettini could take his place. However, the Rome player had some problems during the season and may not be fit enough to play in a tournament in which Italy expects to progress all the way to the final – possibly against a Spanish team Carlos Alcaraz may have one of his players. The worst-case scenario for Italy is one in which neither Sinner nor Berrettini are available. In that case, the player called to close the roster would likely be Luciano Darderi.

The schedule

As usual the schedule is quite tight. France will face Belgium in the quarter-finals; Spain will face the Czech Republic; Argentina plays against Germany; Italy, as already written, will undoubtedly play against Austria. These competitions will be held between November 18 and 20. The semi-finals are scheduled for Friday 20th and Saturday 21st November, while the final will be played on 23rd November at 3pm. Dates and times are subject to change. It will be a long weekend full of great tennis and hopefully with the two best players in the world.

The tournament format

This year’s Davis Cup format goes back to the recent past. In 2024, the International Tennis Federation tried a new formula, experimenting with a group stage that convinced no one: not the players, not the audience, not even the same ITF…. For 2025, the format is very similar to what we were used to.

After two qualifying phases (in January and September), the Final 8 starts in tournament format with the quarter-finals. Each team must win two of the three matches, with the third match being a doubles match if necessary. That adds a spicy variable to the matchup.

A tournament that already had some surprises during the qualifying matches (Australia, the United States and the Netherlands – last year’s finalist – were all eliminated) thus returns to a more familiar setting for the most important phase: the final one. The Davis Cup finals are played at a pretty busy time, with the ATP finals and the lavish Saudi exhibition of the Six Kings’ Slam very close by, so players like Alcaraz or Sinner have to choose when to play. The Davis Cup probably won’t be their first choice.
