Sheffield Wednesday lost manager Danny Rohl in the summer and now he says he is the ‘leading contender’ for a takeover as Rangers boss talkSPORT.

Sheffield Wednesday has had a chaotic 2025. Their fortunes suffered a sharp decline midway through last season before descending into utter chaos behind the scenes at SWFC.

The 2024/25 season was full of off-field drama, particularly the public fallout between owner Dejphon Chansiri and then-manager Danny Rohl. Their working relationship seemed irreparable, and as the club’s financial problems deepened, Rohl’s decision to stay away from training, despite still being under contract, further damaged his once strong bond with the supporters.

Since his departure, Rohl has remained out of management, but that could soon change. A new report from talkSPORT has claimed that Rohl is now the leading contender to replace former Southampton boss Russell Martin at Rangers.

The Scottish Giants looked set to appoint former boss Steven Gerrard, but that fell through last night. Now it appears Rohl will take the reins after impressing the Rangers hierarchy in talks.

Sean Dyche and Derek McInnes are other candidates. Rohl was linked with many clubs this past summer before officially leaving SWFC.

Leicester City, Middlesbrough and Southampton were all clubs that Rohl was touted for. He was even briefly linked with Sheffield United before Ruben Selles was sacked, but that was quickly ended.

Is Danny Rohl the man for Rangers?

Danny Rohl has done an excellent job with Sheffield Wednesday. The great escape he achieved during his first campaign was remarkable considering the conditions under which he worked.

However, the final months of his tenure with the Owls have tarnished his legacy at the club. While few supporters would disagree with Rohl’s frustrations with Chansiri, it was his public interviews and apparent openness to other job opportunities while still under contract that left a sour taste among the Hillsborough faithful.

After several managerial vacancies were filled elsewhere, Rohl returned on Wednesday. He would leave shortly afterwards, once takeover talks collapsed and Chansiri’s mismanagement plunged the club into deeper turmoil.

A move to Rangers would be a big step forward for Rohl in terms of expectations; however, it could be a match made in Heaven. He fed off the supporters at SWFC, and that’s certainly something he can do given the support a club like Rangers has.

A reunion with one former player and another could be on the horizon

If Rohl gets the Rangers job, he will be reunited with a former SWFC star. Sheffield Wednesday sold Wangerboy Gassama to the Scottish giants this summer.

Gassama has had a great start in Scotland despite Rangers’ poor season so far. The winger has scored five goals in 16 games in all competitions.

If rumors are to be believed, another reunion could also be possible. Rangers have been heavily linked with a move for SWFC man Pierce Charles in January, a move that could be accelerated by the arrival of Rohl.
