NHL Rumors: Don’t expect any trades before the holiday break
Nate Thompson: “Talk about the trade deadline and what it’s like right after the Olympic break. And you see last night (Tuesday night) that Tyler Seguin went down, and the Dallas Stars are obviously a contending team now, and you see this parity across the league, like, will there be a trader sooner rather than later? Are GMs going to move, faster in terms of trades and in the trade market than in recent years?”
Dave Pagnotta: “I think so. I mean, I think there are teams that are doing that even more. Because of the cap flexibility that a lot of teams have, there’s a lot more wiggle room. Now some teams are right up against it. It’s obviously going to make things tough for them, but you have some teams that have some extra wiggle room earlier in the season.”
Now they continue to accumulate cap space, but it gives them the wiggle room to make a move earlier in the season so they don’t have to wait until the trade deadline. And like you said, the Olympic break ends, the trade deadline is 13 days later. I suspect that you will now see a number of teams first. Some GMs will tell you that if you can make a trade today that improves their team, of course they will, but as you get closer to the Olympic break and players who aren’t going to the Olympics anyway and can get used to their environment a little sooner, depending on who you talk to on each team.
Some teams are looking at that as a potential trade deadline scenario, where you can make moves ahead of time, get your guys acclimated, if they have to bring their families over, just make things a lot easier and smoother because of that break in the schedule. But above all, it is the maximum flexibility that these teams have to make these types of moves.
NHL Rumors: Will There Be Another Alexandre Carrier-Type Trade This Season?
The Stars are a team signed to Kiefer Sherwood in Vancouver. $1.5 million cap hit. A lot of teams are very attracted to that figure, plus the physicality and goals he brings. But I wouldn’t be surprised if a team like the Dallas Stars gets some action here, trying to go for the Stanley Cup.
Obviously, Tyler Seguin’s injury is significant, and they’re going to get a second opinion here and reevaluate him to see what that timeline is actually going to be. If he effectively misses the entire playoff run, if they advance to a Stanley Cup Final in mid-to-late June, if he’s not going to be available for that, they can put him on LTIR for the end of the season, and use his entire cap hit to their advantage in that kind of thing.
It’s clear they want Seguin back in the lineup. But these are the cards that unfortunately everyone has to deal with. But Dallas will be active. I think some other teams will. And because of the cap flexibility some teams have, I think some teams may be willing to be more active sooner rather than closer to the trade deadline.
