The latest AWD models have 150 hp from another variant of Dacia’s mild-hybrid powertrain. While previously the 140 hp version (a 1.2-liter three-cylinder turbo with some electrical assistance) was only offered with a manual gearbox (and the full hybrid 155 only with an automatic transmission), this new setup will use a six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Dacia says the transmission is ‘responsive’, including paddle shifters (unusual on a Dacia) for manual shifting ‘when drivers want more control, whether tackling challenging terrain, towing or simply enjoying the drive.’
While the Bigster was initially launched with a 130 hp 4×4 variant, that is no longer in the configurator: both the 140 hp MHEV and the 155 hp hybrid are front-wheel drive only. For the Duster, the 130 hp 4×4 is only offered with a manual. It’s easy to see why an all-wheel drive automatic variant of either family-friendly SUV could be appealing. It is said that the new models will ‘enhance what Dacia does best: rugged, rugged SUVs with the kind of reliable practicality that makes adventure part of everyday life.’
What a 150hp all-wheel drive Duster or Bigster will cost, and when you’ll be able to get one, isn’t clear at this point, but they’re on their way. To give an idea, the current 140bhp front-wheel drive manual version in a top-spec Bigster Extreme costs £27,015; adding another driven axle and a smarter car will surely increase the asking price by almost £30,000. As for the Duster, the 130bhp 4×4 costs £26,595; expect a significant premium again. Or, for those who prefer their off-road-ready Dacias with a manual and manual only, last year’s Dusters cost £20,000…
