Posts two front-running scores on Friday

They got him right.

Charles Town’s jockeys and attendants lay in wait for 10-pound apprentice Nomar Arroyo Bueno after Saturday’s first race. Luckily it was a cheerful attack.

Local riders greeted Arroyo Bueno with the traditional water-shaving-cream-powder salute as he returned after leading J. Belkin to a victory in the opener. It was the first victory in Arroyo Bueno’s career.

He enjoyed it so much that he came back and did it again aboard his next horse, Caribbean Comedy, in the fifth race.

J. Belkin beat the 9-5 favorite in the opener, a first-time claimer at the bottom going 6 ½ furlongs. The New York-bred Joevia gelding, trained by Tyler Shanley for Greentree Stables LLC, now has one win from seven starts.

That’s cold and wet, says Nomar Arroyo Bueno.

Arroyo Bueno put J. Belkin into action early and sent him straight to the front. He had a two-length lead after a slow opening quarter-mile in 25 seconds flat, but was soon joined by Coco Sun, who moved to almost equal terms within three-eighths.

Those two rivals held on most of the rest of the way, and J. Belkin eased away in the last sixteenth to win by length. The running time on a fast main track was 1:22.55.

Four races later, Arroyo Bueno found himself aboard the 2-1 second choice Caribbean Comedy in a beaten $5,000 claimer going 4 ½ furlongs. The five-year-old Barbados mare sparred with longshot Peggy’s Way through the opening quarter-mile, taking out that rival around the turn and keeping the rest safe to win by a length in 53.11 seconds.

Caribbean Comedy, 4-for-11 in her career, is trained by Anthony Farrior for Conroy Thoroughbreds LLC.

Arroyo Bueno now has two wins and a second from thirteen career starts with earnings of $25,226.
