Coventry City want to bring Dan Neil from Sunderland to the club in January as his contract expires this summer. TEAM Talk.
Coventry City rise to the top of the Championship as the half-way point of the season approaches. It has been a remarkable season for CCFC so far, with just two defeats in twenty games and an impressive total of 51 goals.
Frank Lampard will now be keen to keep his squad intact during the January window. He could also look to strengthen further as the Sky Blues look to maintain their momentum.
According to him, Coventry City have their eye on a new midfielder by the name of Dan Neil TEAM Talk. Neil captained Sunderland last season as they gained promotion from the Championship.
On the way to promotion, Sunderland defeated Coventry City in the play-off semi-finals in a dramatic way. Neil hasn’t been given many opportunities in the top flight and with his contract expiring this summer, he could be cashed in in January.
Neil has become a victim of his own success
Dan Neil was a key part of Sunderland’s success last season and had been for many seasons before. After coming through the ranks at Sunderland, he quickly became a prominent member of the first team.
He embodied everything that was special about Sunderland’s project, but now that the club is back in the Premier League, he could be ready to move on. With January quickly approaching, Neil has played just two league matches this season and amassed just two minutes of playing time.
Following Sunderland’s recruitment in the summer, it always seemed unlikely that consistent playing time would be possible for the majority of their promotion-winning squad. In Neil’s position alone, Sunderland have signed Noah Sadiki, Habib Diarra and new club captain Granit Xhaka.
The Black Cats will not want to lose Neil this summer for nothing, especially as a homegrown player. CCFC could be ready to swoop in and take advantage of this situation.
Dan Neil’s career statistics
| Season | Division | Games | Goals | Assists |
| 25/26 | Premier League | 2 | 0 | 0 |
| 24/25 | Championship | 44 | 2 | 3 |
| 23/24 | Championship | 42 | 4 | 5 |
| 22/23 | Championship | 47 | 2 | 4 |
| 21/22 | League One | 39 | 3 | 7 |
Coventry City’s current defensive midfield options
Neil would have good competition for minutes even if he made the cut back to the championship. Coventry City has some good options in that area.
Matt Grimes is a nailed-on starter for CCFC and could be an excellent partner for Neil. While someone like Josh Eccles would also want that spot next to Grimes.
Jack Rudoni and Victor Torp can also operate in those areas, but prefers to play further forward. As a specialist defensive midfielder, Neil could be a very useful pick-up for the Sky Blues.
