The bodies of 32-year-old Raj Tambe and his wife Neha, alias Shivani, were recovered from their house on Monday, a police official said. Neighbors became concerned after the couple did not appear all day and alerted police.
Police arrived and entered the house, only to encounter a gruesome scene. Shivani lay dead on the bed, apparently strangled. Her husband, Raj Tambe, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in the same room.
Then they made another surprising discovery: a message written in lipstick on the wall indicating a possible murder-suicide. The message, believed to have been written by Raj, claimed that his wife was “talking to someone else” and that they were “caught meeting in the park”.
The name ‘Rajesh Biswas’ and a mobile number were written on the wall. Police also recovered a separate one-page note from the spot in which the husband blamed Rajesh Biswas for the sequence of events that led to the death.
The couple, both sanitation workers at Lions Company, reportedly had a love marriage a decade ago. They had three children, who were not home at the time of the incident, police said.
According to investigators, Raj suspected that Shivani was having an extramarital affair. He caught her on Saturday evening while she was on the phone with another man, as evidenced by the note he left. Raj also claimed that she was caught meeting the same man in Urja Park.
Initial findings suggest that Raj may have killed his wife by strangling her and died by suicide shortly afterwards. Police are awaiting post-mortem reports to determine the precise timescale of the deaths.
Efforts are being made to identify and trace the person mentioned in the message on the wall.
