Could a big or small trade be in the works for certain teams?
The Fourth Period’s Dave Pagnotta joined SiriusXM NHL Network Radio with Gord Stellick and Scott Laughlin on Monday and was asked if a trade could be in the works, even with teams so close in the standings.

Gord Stellick: “So we’re getting to the point of not advocating for the firing of coaches at all, but more for a trade or two. So the nice teams of every team or most teams are still pretty close, as far as the playoffs go. But we’re talking about Nazem Kadri in Calgary. You know you are a huge asset. Doug Armstrong is known to be fearless and shake, rattle and roll things.
NHL Rumors: When Will the Trades Come?
So last year, patience was a virtue in St. Louis. They turned it around. And we always wonder about Nashville. I’m going to the Steven Stamkos thing dead. He scored again last weekend. But you start to wonder: where can we get our first nugget? Maybe not, not as big as Mikko Rantanen say, but something like that or some little things that are starting to trickle down to some teams.
Dave Pagnotta: “Yes, and we’ve seen, we’ve heard that the discussion has been heating up over the last week, two weeks. Some of these teams, or a lot of the teams that are looking to add, have started asking those questions just to get a sense of the market. What’s the price tag? Who might be available now? Who might be available later?”
And then you see other teams getting some of those calls, like Calgary, like St. Louis, they’re like, ‘Okay, yeah. Listen, we’re open here.’ Let’s see what can happen. Throw Nashville, kind of into that mix, to some extent as well. And we’re getting, we’re actually now, in this new era of the NHL, with the cap going up, there’s a little bit more flexibility to make moves earlier in the season, just financially, because teams have that space.
And whether it is Calgary. Look, Kadri, first of all, it’s going to be a bit of an overpayment. He still has three years left on his contract. He really likes it in Calgary. You’ll have to convince the Flames to pull the trigger on something like that with one of the teams not on his no-trade list.
NHL rumors: The stars and Robertson aren’t close
But next to him Rasmus Andersson – we know there is – and this is likely his last season, by all indications, in Calgary. He will be traded at some point. Blake Coleman is a man who will also arouse a lot of interest. One year left on his contract. He has a limited, non-trade, I think 10 or 12 team list of places he would go.
St. Louis is certainly willing to listen. I think we’ll hear more, especially with the Blues. I think we’ll hear more from guys like that Brayden Schenn And Justin Faulk. Veteran guys who haven’t limited trades. They each have a 15-team no-trade list. They have a specific term. But I think these are some guys the Blues want to listen to. And if you’re creative enough, I think they’d listen to some others.
Obviously (Jordan) Kyrou got scratched earlier last week, that was mainly due to trying to send a message. And someone had to fall on that grenade. And it just so happened to be him, pushing it. But still, whether it’s him or (Pavel) Buchnevich, both of whom have a complete no-trade. I think St. Louis is willing to be a little creative. But I think especially with the Blues, both Schenn and Faulk will be names you’ll hear. Ryan O’Reilly and Nashville.
Like it’s going to be teams that are going to look, that are going to continue to look, to see what’s available, what are the prices, and is that true? Is it opportunistic for us to act now rather than later? The Leafs are looking for a top-six guy. Vancouver is looking for a center. The Habs also continue to look good, although they are more passive due to the good start they are having.
NHL Rumors: Speculation about Brayden Schenn will only increase
So let’s see how things go over the next week or so. Will some of these teams get itchy trigger fingers? And look, we all know guys like to do things in person, sometimes it helps. GM meetings this week, maybe that will let things trickle down a bit more.
