What will the New York Rangers do with Artemi Panarin?
Dave Pagnotta of The Fourth Period was on Sirius XM NHL Network Radio with Steve Kouleas and Craig Button. He was then asked if the New York Rangers could approach Artemi Panarin and ask him to sign a new extension. If he doesn’t want to sign, would the team consider trading him?

Craig Button: “So Dave, you’re talking about floating, right? So I guess we have to define what floating is? Can the New York Rangers win? I don’t think it stands a chance. So whether you’re floating or whatever, and you can get a return on Artemi Panarin, if you don’t want him to return, then you don’t have to move him. Jarmo Kekäläinen found himself in a very similar situation with (Sergei) Bobrovsky and Panarin. They were pushing.
In Columbus it was a little different for Jarmo as they tried to establish that they could be relevant and be a good team. So like making the playoffs even though they might not have been Stanley Cup contenders. Well, they weren’t Stanley Cup contenders, that was legit, but are the Rangers in the same spot? If I don’t have that, I’m going to play Chris Drury. I’m going to sit in Chris Drury’s chair now. Aretemi, you sign with us, or else you move and leave. I have no hesitation because they are not Stanley Cup contenders.”
Dave Pagnotta: Look, I agree with you, and I think they’re in that boat. I mean, look, if this is a team that has an idea, or at least figures out that no, he’s going to go to market, he wants to test, or even if he doesn’t want to commit right now, but hey, I’ll have those conversations once our season is over, if there’s not some level of confidence that they can keep Artemi Panarin, then I think you’re right. I think they should definitely explore the market.

The market around Artemi Panarin and more
Now I think they’re being considered in Colorado, for example, and I think many are putting them at the top when it comes to Cup contenders. If Necas are still going back and forth, and they don’t have a full, clear idea, then yes, I know they took a different path with (Mikko) Rantanen last year. Do they want to experience that again? Or do they want to say: let’s put all our eggs in this basket. Let’s push for a Stanley Cup and figure this out afterwards.
LA, if they can get things going and push a similar boat, although I know (Adrian) Kempe is really hoping he has an extension by the end of the calendar year but before we get to 2026. So we’ll see what happens there once talks resume later this month between Ken Holland and Kempe’s agent, JP Barry.
But different circumstances. I think given everything that’s happened in New York, Craig, you’re right behind that. If they don’t have that much confidence that he will stay, what are we going to do? We’re going to chase and lose one of the best strikers in the league for nothing. I think they need to seriously look at generating assets from him.
