Blue Jays just made one big signing. Can they make another one?
The Blue Jays were the most aggressive team in the first month of the offseason. Their seven-year deal with Dylan Cease is their biggest signing to date. They agreed to a three-year contract with KBO MVP Cody Ponce to deepen the rotation. None of that is expected to take them out of the mix as a top free agent hitter. It would be great to see them sign Tucker and Bichette – who will likely receive the three biggest contracts of the offseason along with Cease – but the Jays appear to be firmly in play for one of the top two hitters in free agency.
Re-signing Bichette would be an easier move, but Tucker is the better all-around player. He is a lifetime .273/.358/.507 hitter and is coming off a .266/.377/.464 mark in his lone season with the Cubs. Even though the Jays don’t really need a cornerback, Tucker is a caliber player that any team can make room for.
ESPN’s Jeff Passan wrote last month that some executives at other clubs viewed the Jays as the most likely landing spot. That preceded the signing of the ceasefire, but has not closed the door to the possibility.
