Los Angeles Kings Forward Corey Perry may have suffered an injury during an ice training at the Toyota Sports Performance Center in El Segundo on Friday, Sources report.
Details remain limited, but Perry was reportedly taken from the ice in a wheelchair for further evaluation after the incident, which took place along the boards. It is unclear whether the injury is the result of contact with another player or to catch a rut on the ice.
The 40-year-old winger, signed by GM Ken Holland for a one-year contract, $ 2 million last July, was in the last phases of preparation from the outdoor season prior to Kings Training Camp next week. Perry was expected to play a Bottom-Six role and at the same time brought veteran leadership to a team looking for youth and experience.
The legendary career of Perry comprises almost 1,400 NHL matches in the regular season, 935 points and 1500 criminal minutes, as well as 141 points in 237 Postseason matches. He appeared in Six Stanley Cup Finals, won a ring with the Anaheim Ducks in 2007 and reached the final twice with the Edmonton Oilers in successive seasons.
He can go down as one of the happiest unfortunate athletes in the NHL. He has been to the final several times in recent years, but no longer won the cup with one of the teams he went there. He wanted to sign up with the oilers, but the question to pay him after a strong season meant a move to the kings.
Although he is in the dusk of his career, Perry has remained productive in stops in Dallas, Montreal, Tampa Bay, Chicago and Edmonton, with 159 points in 404 games in the past seasons.
Although any significant absence would be a blow to the kings, the team has depth at Wing, with players such as Akil Thomas, Andre Lee, Jeff Malott and Taylor Ward who are able to fill in if necessary.
No official update about the condition of Perry has been released, but his status will be followed closely when the Training Camp team approaches. The hope is that this looks a lot worse than it actually is.
