The Mavericks didn’t get immediate results when they opened the season with Cooper Flagg as their starting point guard, but both Flagg and head coach Jason Kidd believe the experience was valuable to the rookie’s development.

According to Mavs.com’s Eddie Sefko, the early experiment was seen as a learning opportunity rather than a short-term solution.

“I definitely think it definitely helped me grow,” Flagg said. “I learned a lot in that short time.”

He noted that the team faced tough losses early on, but said the experience helped him feel more comfortable and aware on the floor.

“I had never really played point guard before,” Flagg added. “It’s very different from any other position. You have to be aware of a lot of other things.”

Kidd acknowledged that the move was unpopular, but emphasized the long-term perspective.

“This is an 18-year-old playing against the best players in the world,” he said.

While the numbers didn’t always reflect success, Kidd felt the player handled the responsibility well.

“We’re playing the long game with him,” the coach said, praising Flagg’s openness to new roles and his willingness to learn.
