Control-resonant gameplay revealed! New skills and weapons

Remedy Entertainment officially debuted a new gameplay trailer for the upcoming Control Resonant during February’s recent State of Play. Following its initial reveal at the Game Awards 2025, this extended look offers a deeper look into the sequel. It confirms that the game will be released in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Dylan Faden takes the lead in Control Resonant

Unlike the 2019 original, which had players controlling Jesse Faden, Control Resonant puts her brother, Dylan Faden, in the lead role. The story concerns a paranatural invasion across the city in New York City. Specifically, the new trailer highlights Dylan’s journey through Manhattan’s “West Incursion Zone.”

In this zone, deviations that affect gravity cause the architecture to fold in on itself. That’s why Dylan uses unique movement mechanisms to navigate. The ‘Reach’ ability allows players to teleport to new structures. Additionally, the ‘Shift’ ability allows players to redirect gravity and walk along the surfaces of inverted buildings. This mechanic draws comparisons to the Gravity Rush series.

Melee combat and the aberrant

The sequel places a significantly greater emphasis on melee combat than its predecessor. Dylan wields a shape-shifting weapon called the ‘Aberrant’. Like the service weapon, it changes shape in flight. The trailer showed the Aberrant transforming into:

  • A large single leaf
  • Double daggers
  • A pair of fists
  • A giant hammer
  • A sweeping scythe

Senior Game Designer Sergey Mohov confirmed this via the PlayStation Blog that more shapes will appear in the final game. Additionally, players can expect an equipment system for deeper customization, allowing them to equip different weapon forms and skills before battle.

The hunt for resonances

Dylan’s main mission is to hunt for “Resonants”. These enemies are the corrupt remnants of people who once had great power. In terms of gameplay, Resonants serve as big boss battles. Each has a distinct visual design and moveset.

By defeating a Resonant, players will earn new combat skills. While the game isn’t completely open world, Mohov said it features large, distinct zones full of side activities and hidden encounters. The West Incursion Zone is just one example of these vast areas.
