It’s even safe to say that Conor McGregor can tell when a fight is more about money than real competition. That’s exactly how he feels about the matter upcoming boxing match between Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis. The fight, scheduled for November 14, has already sparked major debate, mainly due to the huge size difference between the two fighters. Paul, who is 6 feet tall, will tower over Davis, who is only 6 feet tall.

The YouTuber turned boxer has also weighed as much as 227 pounds in previous fights, while Davis usually competes around 135 pounds. Given this imbalance, McGregor isn’t buying into the hype. The Irish star made it clear in a recent statement that he has no interest in seeing the fight live, which he sees as more of a cash grab than a real match.

Conor McGregor has questioned the legitimacy of the exhibition fight between Jake Paul and Gervonta Davis

It’s rare these days for Conor McGregor’s opinions to align with those of the wider combat sports community. But when it comes to Jake Paul vs. Gervonta Davis, the Irishman and boxing fans appear to be on the same page.

In a recent interview with DAZN Boxing, the former UFC doubles champion made it clear that he is not buying into the hype surrounding the event. He said, “I honestly don’t know what to think about it. Kind of similar to the [Mike] Tyson fight.”

He added: “I am indifferent to it. Be curious to see it.” [but] I didn’t invest in it. I watch X. I watch the highlights on X [laughs].”

McGregor’s lack of enthusiasm reflects how many fans think Davis would choose to face Paul instead of Lamont Roach in a rematch. It will be interesting to see what kind of viewers the fight attracts, especially since it will be streamed live on Netflix. But it is clear that McGregor will not be among those present.

What makes the Irishman’s comments even more interesting is his own history with crossover boxing. In August 2017, he took part in one of the greatest combat sports spectacles ever when he faced Floyd Mayweather in his professional boxing debut.

Initially dismissed as a ridiculous idea, the fight eventually became a worldwide phenomenon due to the star power and intrigue surrounding both men. McGregor performed well early, but Mayweather ultimately secured a TKO victory in the 10th round.

Ironically, Davis actually fought in the co-main event of that same Mayweather vs. McGregor card, a night that helped catapult him to superstardom. He defeated Francisco Fonseca at 130 pounds in an amazing performance. Eight years later, Davis is now one of boxing’s biggest draws.

Like Mayweather, he has embraced the art of creating spectacle, a trait that is clearly on display as he prepares to face Paul in an exhibition fight later this year. However, there is a big difference. When McGregor fought Mayweather, the weight difference was relatively small. McGregor weighed 153 pounds, while Mayweather weighed 149.5 pounds. In contrast, Paul and Davis are separated by a huge size difference, which makes this match feel much less legitimate.

Paul has also built a reputation for this type of gimmick fighting. His recent exhibition against 59-year-old Mike Tyson in December 2024, also on Netflix, was heavily criticized due to the three-decade age difference.

Before that, Paul’s string of fights against retired UFC fighters like Anderson Silva, Tyron Woodley and Ben Askren may have increased his popularity, but they didn’t exactly boost his credibility in the boxing world. At 12-1, Paul continues to make headlines, but as McGregor and many fans agree, not every fight deserves to be called a real match.
