The wish of Conor McGregor to become president of his native Ireland has, as expected, a snag.
As multiple political commentators and media (including this) noted earlier, the political ambitions of McGregor probably seemed to fail in view of the requirements for walking for President in Ireland. They include a minimum age to walk for president in Ireland (35, who has passed McGregor), Plus nominated by at least 20 members of the OireActas (Parliament of Ireland), and four local authorities (including municipal councils, fire brigade authorities, etc.).
Those nominations would always be difficult to come by for McGregor, who, despite the fact that he was MMA’s greatest star, he was a polarizing figure at home – especially after he was legally liable in a civil process around an accusation of sexual violence.
Instead of the required nominations, it seems that Conor McGregor directly appeals to the people and launches a petition (via Change.org) ask for support in circumventing the nomination requirements.
“I propose that a petition that argues for an adjustment of the nomination process to be admitted to the vote. I claim that the citizens of Ireland, both at home and abroad, must have the unhindered right to determine the candidates appearing on the presidential vote,” wrote McGregor in his petition. “That is why I beg you to join this aim by signing this petition. Your support will play an important role in defending a lake and democratic election process, which makes the population of Ireland their own future.”
At present, the petition of McGregor has fewer than 8,000 signatures. The Irish star has been aware of politics for some time, with conversations about the running of President in the last March and since then.
