Complications emerge with the selection of Devon Toews to Team Canada

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews was selected to Team Canada on Wednesday, but there could be a potential complication when it comes to him reaching Italy. Toews and his wife are expecting a baby, and he noted that if the baby isn’t there when he’s needed, he won’t go.

His wife is due in February and he said this is much more important to him than making an Olympic team. “Being for that is something I think about more than standing up for my country. I will be there when that time comes, but right now I am there for my wife.”

He told the media:

“If my baby hasn’t arrived yet, I’m going to stay here. That’s 100% what I will do, I’m not leaving until the baby gets here and everyone is home safe. I think she’s excited, I think she’s excited that I get this opportunity, it doesn’t come every day. She’s excited about that, but I’ll definitely be there for that baby.”

He added that he hasn’t spoken to Hockey Canada about it, and didn’t feel he needed to.

They may not feel the same. If there’s a chance he can’t make the Olympics, they’ll need to identify and possibly name a replacement for one of the many players who were considered.

When asked if he would get a call to find out, he was selected: “It’s cool. Should be a fun time. You know, kind of weird on a game day morning to get it, but yeah, pretty honored nonetheless.” He added that it’s cool to be named to the team, and everyone is excited about it.
