Commandments rise to win Fountain of Youth

From Wathnan Racing Commandment not only proved he could go two turns in the $400,000 Fountain of Youth Stakes (G2) on February 28 at Gulfstream Parkthe In mischief Colt indicated that he had more endurance when necessary.

Commandment, the Brad Cox-trained 2-1 favourite, was exhausted and withstood a determined challenge from homebred Michael and Katherine Ball Head Wallabee to win the Fountain of Youth by a neck.

He covered 1 1/16 miles on a fast track in 1:43.33, a performance worth 50 qualifying points for the May 2 Kentucky Derby (G1) on Churchill Downs– which will likely give him enough points to reach the first leg of the Triple Crown if it is oversubscribed. Churchill Downs officials use qualifying points as the preferred system when the Derby draws more than the maximum field size of 20 horses.

He returned $6.80 for a $2 win bet.

Cox said he liked where jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. had Commandment the entire time, and he was especially encouraged by what came after the finish.

“I thought he had a good trip… within the path and finished well,” Cox said. ‘I had to fight the wind and he galloped out well again. Irad said he asked him to gallop past the second wire and he had enough… passed the two-turn test.’

Now that the colt has proven himself around two turns, Cox said the Florida Derby (G1) on March 28 is the “logical place” while noting the April 4 Blue Grass Stakes (G1) on Keeneland as another option, depending on how Commandment comes out of Saturday’s race.

The journey of the commandment required calm from the beginning. He bumped with Bravaro at the start, then took position in the midpack while it was a long shot of 50-1 Rockies Balboa used the rail to take control. Rockies Balboa completed the opening quarter in:23.16 and the half in:46.89, with the field behind him in a tight, stalking line.

As the race developed into the far corner, the complexion quickly changed. Rockies Balboa was collared near the five-sixteenth marker and withdrew, and Chris Fountoukis’ Loneliness dude one of Saffie Joseph Jr.’s three trainees, after following, moved forward near the three-eighths post.

Golden Square Napoleon Solo a Grade 1-winning juvenile returning for his 3-year-old debut and racing 1 1/16 miles for the first time, was prominent early after breaking awkwardly and rushing to meet the challenge, but he drifted and came up empty on the way home, fading to fifth.

WinStar Farm, CHC and First Go Racing’s Jackson hole close to pace on rail, also faded after 5 furlongs.

Ortiz, meanwhile, kept the command clear and progressive. They came closer to the far turn and then made a sharp angle to the rail at the quarter pole – a move that allowed him to save ground, but had added significance given the track’s recent perceived advantage.

Cox said he felt Commandment was moving well enough as they headed home, and he believed they had measured Solitude Dude until he also noticed Chief Wallabee was riding outside on what is typically “the best part of the track.”

Chief Wallabee’s run all but secured the race. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, the colt was making just his second career start and first route, but he made a sweeping four-wide move around the far turn, leveled terms in the top section and dueled all the way to the wire.

Mott called it an eye-opening effort in defeat.

“To compete against horses that have a lot more experience, I think he showed up,” he said, adding that the connections now have “four or five races to choose from” as they map out the next step.

In the lane, Commandment put his head forward, but he had no room for error. Chief Wallabee quickly showed up and the pair engaged in a lengthy, intense duel.

The command came late under pressure from the right, but he refused to give in and barely prevailed, confirming Ortiz’s confidence in the colt’s professionalism.

“He’s been doing everything so well since day one,” Ortiz said. “I trust him and when the space came up, he was ready to go.”

Solitude Dude was third in his first attempt in two turns, finishing behind two colts with a deeper base for the job. Joseph said the effort was solid, even if the distance ultimately proved less than ideal.

“Solitude Dude ran well,” the trainer said. “He was beaten by two good horses in a ride that probably won’t be his best ride.”

Jockey Flavien Prat echoed that assessment. “I think he will have distance restrictions anyway. But I thought it was a very good effort,” said the rider.

The Joseph-trained Bravaro, owned by Albert Ciuffetelli, Stephanie S. Brennan, Shining Stables, BAG Racing Stables and Paul Braverman, finished fourth after early problems compromised him.

“He had to start early in the race,” Joseph said.

Bravaro, who finished second in the Holy Bull Stakes (G3) behind Almost could meet the Not this time foal again, as Todd Pletcher’s trainee will also be referred to the Florida Derby.

The Fountain of Youth Stakes distributed qualifying points for the May 2 Derby on a 50-25-15-10-5 basis among the top five finishers.

The Commandment, meanwhile, seems positioned to be the horse they all must beat after passing the Fountain of Youth exam in two turns with both determination and a strong gallop.

The breeding of the winner only deepens the classic conversation. Commandment is a Kentucky-bred, Class 1 winning bay colt Orb mare Sippican Harbour . Seven-time top sire Into Mischief, sire of three Kentucky Derby winners, is listed at Spendthrift Farm in Kentucky for $250,000.

Fifteen Fountain of Youth participants won the Run for the Roses, including the 2025 Fountain of Youth winner, Sovereignty also a son of Into Mischief.

Case Clay, Wathnan Racing’s racing manager in the United States, highlighted both Commandment’s achievements and bloodlines after watching the replay: “Great horse, great jockey, great trainer. Great father. Great mother.”
