Big innings ensures victory
The Comets’ offense was relentless, using a five-run third inning and a four-run sixth to pull away from the Buffaloes. It is notable that the team has not yet hit a homerun this season, but instead relies on timely hitting and aggressive baserunning. Every Comets batter in the starting lineup had at least one hit, contributing to a total of 15 hits and four walks on the afternoon.
First baseman Korson Hastings is warming up at the plate. He led the charge for the Comets, going 2-for-4 with six RBIs. Hastings’ six RBI ranked ninth most in a game in program history. Hastings now leads the team with eight RBIs on the young season.
Hastings also hit the walk-off single in yesterday’s game.
Catcher Nico Fernandez also had a standout day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs.
Pitching and defense
Tobin Oler earned the start for the Comets, allowing four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work. Oler threw 65 pitches, had no strikeouts, walked one and hit three batters.
The Comets’ bullpen was out, delivering 4.2 innings of scoreless relief to slam the door on West Texas A&M:
Baley Ray: 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 BB, 1 HBP, 1 SO (30 places)
Landry Powell: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 HBP (17 spots)
Andrew Brown: 1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 BB (15 places)
Looking ahead
The Comets will go for the series sweep tomorrow at noon.
After the series finale, UT Dallas will hit the road to take on first-place St. Mary’s, who currently sit at 5-0.
